What is the Hong Kong–Macao program
Hong Kong-Macao Medicine and Equipment Connect (HKMC) is a state program of the PRC within the Greater Bay Area economic zone. It allows accredited clinics in the region to use innovative medicines and medical devices already approved in Hong Kong or Macao but not yet registered in the rest of mainland China — and unavailable in many countries.
Foshan Fosun Chancheng Hospital participates in this program. For the patient, this means access to therapy that may simply not be registered in their own country — legally, within a state initiative, and not by a "gray" route.
What is really available
The program is not "any medicine on request." The greatest demand and regular availability are in specific categories:
- Oncology targeted drugs — act precisely on the tumor's molecular targets
- Immunotherapy — drugs that activate the immune response against the tumor
- Orphan drugs — for rare diseases where treatment options are extremely limited
- High-tech orthopedic consumables
- Specialized neurological medicines

The key part: how it works in practice
It's important to be precise here, because there are many myths around "medicines from China." The real arrangement is as follows:
The medicines are used during treatment at the clinic
The main scenario is that therapy is given during your hospital stay at FFCH, under medical supervision. That is the core purpose of the program: to come and receive treatment with a medicine that is not available at home.
The course can be legally carried home
If it is medically justified, the rules allow a prescription to be issued permitting you to carry the prescribed course out of China and continue treatment at home. The clinic provides a full set of documents: the prescription, instructions for use, and customs declaration paperwork.
What the clinic does NOT do: it does not send prescription medicines by mail or courier to your home country. This is prohibited both by Chinese rules and by the regulations of most countries. Anyone who promises to "mail medicines from China" is misleading you. There is only one legal route — to carry the prescribed course with you, with the documents.
It is precisely this legality, with full documentation, that distinguishes the program from ordinary medical tourism. You receive not a "parcel without documents" but prescribed therapy with a prescription and customs papers.
Why this matters for an international patient
For a number of diagnoses — especially rare forms of lymphoma, leukemia and other diseases — there may simply be no registered medicine in your own country. The Hong Kong–Macao program offers a legal way to receive such therapy where it is approved and, if needed, continue the course at home.
